Youth Leadership Program 2010

Program Details
International and American high school students will examine world events and issues through projects, research, and visits to local attractions and events. Communication and leadership skills will develop through class discussion, debate, research, project presentation, discussion with guest speakers and visits to local organizations that work toward conflict resolution and global understanding goals.
Ages: 14-18 years old
**We anticipate the majority of international students will be 15-16 years old, and American students will be juniors in high school (16-17 years old).
Language Level: Advanced
International students are required to have Advanced level English language communication skills. The following test scores meet the minimum proficiency:
TOEFL PBT: 520 (min)
TOEFL CBT: 190 (min)
SLEP: 58 (min)
Course Objectives
This course has two main aims:
* to help students develop effective interpersonal and group communication skills
* to empower students to cultivate their unique leadership abilities and initiate change in their own communities.
Program Structure
Week 1 Classes, guest speakers, and project research
Week 2 Classes, guest speakers, and project research.
End of week 2 is final presentation
Students in the Los Angeles program will participate in a 5-day educational tour to San Francisco. Students in the Boston program will participate in a 5-day educational tour in New York City.
Students will carry out a 5-day service project in the community. Each day will vary. We will attempt to find volunteer work to match the students' interest. Possible opportunities will include environmental organization, homeless shelter, youth services, housing organization.
College Credit - stay tuned!
AETS is working with the Universities to offer interested students the opportunity to earn university credit through the AETS Youth Leadership Program. This is to be confirmed by January 2010.
Once confirmed, each university will provide one transfer credit unit to students. The conditions of this credit include requirements to be fulfilled during the Youth Leadership Program. These include, but are not limited to keeping a comprehensive journal, fully participating in group work and site visits, preparation for and participation in final presentation.
Accommodations: American and international students in double occupancy accommodation
University residence hall
Meal plan: 21 meals per week
Lessons: Mon-Friday, 9 am – 12:30 pm. Max. 15/class.
Afternoons and evenings: guest speakers, visits to educational attractions, and research.
Weekends excursions: local and major sightseeing attractions
